What is Glasshouse Alchemy?
Glasshouse Alchemy is a botanical company focused on rare carnivorous plants, unusual tropicals, tissue culture propagation, and collector-focused plant education. Our mission is to make the weird, the wonderful, and the hard-to-find more accessible to collectors, vivarium builders, and the plant-curious.
Do I need experience to purchase from Glasshouse Alchemy?
Not at all. We offer plants suitable for both beginners and experienced collectors. We encourage customers to research the needs of any plant they purchase and are happy to provide guidance when possible.
Do you sell only carnivorous plants?
No. While carnivorous plants are a major focus, we also offer other unusual, collector-oriented, and tissue-cultured plants as inventory becomes available.
How often do you add new plants?
Inventory changes regularly as plants become available through propagation, acclimation, and new production batches. Follow our social media channels or subscribe to our newsletter for updates.
Tissue Culture
What is tissue culture?
Tissue culture is a sterile propagation method that allows plants to be grown from small pieces of plant tissue in a nutrient-rich laboratory environment. This process enables rapid multiplication of healthy plants while reducing pest and disease risks.
Are tissue culture plants rare?
Many tissue culture plants originate from rare or difficult-to-find species, but the propagation process helps increase availability over time.
Why are tissue culture plants less expensive than mature specimens?
Tissue culture allows multiple plants to be produced from a single parent plant, making desirable species more accessible while reducing pressure on wild populations.
Can I keep a tissue culture plant in its container indefinitely?
No. Tissue culture plants will eventually exhaust available nutrients and space. They should be acclimated and transferred to appropriate growing conditions after receipt.
Do tissue culture plants require special care?
Yes. Plants grown in sterile laboratory conditions must be gradually acclimated to normal humidity, airflow, and light conditions.
Why do tissue culture plants need acclimation?
Plants grown in tissue culture develop under extremely high humidity and protected conditions. When removed from the culture vessel, they must gradually adapt to normal airflow, lower humidity, and stronger light. Acclimation helps prevent dehydration and improves long-term survival.
Will you provide acclimation instructions?
Yes. Acclimation guidance will be provided whenever applicable.
Plant Health & Care
Are your plants pest free?
We take extensive measures to maintain healthy growing environments and sterile propagation practices. However, no greenhouse or plant collection can guarantee absolute freedom from pests indefinitely.
Are your plants grown from seed, cuttings, divisions, or tissue culture?
Depending on the species, plants may be produced through tissue culture, seed, division, cuttings, or other propagation methods. Product listings will specify when relevant.
Will my plant look exactly like the photos?
Plants are living organisms and naturally vary in size, color, and appearance. Listing photos represent typical specimens but individual plants may differ.
What kind of water should I use for carnivorous plants?
Most carnivorous plants require low-mineral water such as distilled water, reverse osmosis (RO) water, or clean rainwater.
Can I grow carnivorous plants as houseplants?
Some species adapt well to indoor growing conditions, while others require seasonal dormancy or specialized environments. Care requirements vary by species.
Shipping & Orders
When do you ship orders?
Orders are typically shipped Monday through Wednesday to minimize the risk of plants sitting in transit over weekends.
Do you ship during extreme weather?
We may delay shipments during periods of extreme heat or cold to help ensure plants arrive safely.
Do you offer local pickup?
Local pickup may be available at select events or by prior arrangement when announced.
How are plants packaged?
Plants are carefully packaged to minimize movement, reduce stress, and protect them during transit.
Do you guarantee live arrival?
We take great care in packaging and shipping every plant. Our Live Arrival Guarantee applies when plants are shipped under appropriate weather conditions using qualifying shipping methods and when any required delivery instructions are followed. In the unlikely event of an issue, it must be reported in accordance with our terms within 4 hours of documented delivery.
Event Questions
Where can I find you in person?
We regularly attend reptile expos, plant events, and collector-focused shows throughout the region. Upcoming events can be found on our Events page.
Can I place an order for pickup at an event?
In many cases, yes. If inventory permits, orders may be placed online and collected at participating events.
Will you bring specific plants to an event?
Customers are encouraged to contact us before an event if they are interested in a particular plant.
Conservation & Ethics
Are your plants wild collected?
We prioritize propagated plants whenever possible and support sustainable cultivation practices that reduce pressure on wild plant populations.
Why is tissue culture important for conservation?
Tissue culture can increase the availability of desirable species while reducing demand for plants collected from natural habitats.
Collector Questions
Do you offer uncommon or hard-to-find species?
Yes. Part of our mission is to make unusual, fascinating, and collector-worthy plants more accessible through propagation and cultivation.
Can I request a specific species?
We welcome suggestions and may consider future propagation projects based on demand, production capacity, and availability of source material.
Will you offer limited releases?
Occasionally. Some plants require years of propagation before sufficient inventory becomes available for release.
