What Is Plant Tissue Culture?

Some of the rarest plants in cultivation begin their lives inside a clear vessel filled with nutrient-rich gel. It looks a little like science fiction. In reality, it's one of the most important propagation methods available to modern growers.

Plant tissue culture is the process of growing plants in a sterile environment using a specialized nutrient medium. Small pieces of plant tissue—called explants—are placed onto a sterile gel containing water, sugars, minerals, vitamins, and plant growth regulators. Under the right conditions, those tissues develop into new plants.

Because the process takes place in a controlled laboratory environment, plants can be propagated without soil, pests, weeds, or many of the diseases commonly encountered in traditional cultivation.
